Homeless people are not in these US States

A new LendingTree analysis found that there are 14.9 million vacant homes across the U.S., with two of the top three states for vacancy rates located in New England.

According to Realtor.com's Hannah Jones, “high vacancy can be the product of relatively small housing markets with relatively high seasonal housing stock,” adding that, “Maine, Vermont, and Alaska have relatively few total homes and relatively high vacation-home markets as a share of all inventory, which leads to a higher vacancy rate.”

Home-flipping profits are cooling nationwide. In Q2 2025, the typical flip sold for $325,000 after being bought for $259,700, netting investors a 25.1% return, about $65K before expenses, per ATTOM.

While still solid, margins have thinned as home prices soften from pandemic highs. "Home prices have softened from their pandemic-era peaks across much of the country, and today’s flippers are seeing slimmer margins as a result. Over the past five-plus years, scarce inventory fueled intense competition and drove prices up," said Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com.
