EuroTrip Day 5 // Biarritz → Bordeaux

From the coast to the city, today was all about architecture.

In Biarritz, cliffside villas with turrets and Belle Époque details sit next to Basque timbered houses in red, green, and white. Neo-Gothic churches rise dramatically over the shoreline, giving the city a mix of resort elegance and tradition.

By evening, we were in Bordeaux, where carved stone façades, grand doors, and golden light define the streets. The city feels timeless—equal parts history, commerce, and refinement.

Two different worlds in one day, both unforgettable.

EuroTrip Day 3- San Sebastián might feel timeless, but it isn’t as old as it looks. After being nearly leveled in 1813, the city was rebuilt on a modern grid, trading medieval streets for wide avenues and grand boulevards. By the late 1800s, the Belle Époque era transformed the shoreline into a playground for royalty and high society, leaving behind the ornate facades, elegant promenades, and French-influenced style we walk through today.

It’s a city defined by contrast—19th-century harmony in sandstone, punctuated by bold modern statements like Moneo’s Kursaal cubes on the waterfront. Yesterday’s walk reminded me that San Sebastián is less about ancient ruins and more about how design and planning can shape a city’s identity in just a couple centuries. It’s a small city with so much design appeal. Very cool.

I have been tracking land listings for sale in the Eaton Fire boundary and today it surpassed 150 listings!

Every day multiple parcels of land pop up for sale. It breaks my heart to see so many homeowners option to not rebuild. I get it and I fear this is just the beginning. With 5k+ lots destroyed how high will this number go? Will 500 owners decide not to rebuild? Will it get to 1k?!? The historical fabric of Altadena has been changed forever.

The developers buying these lots will build quick and modern, the original homes that survived just became that much more important.

Trip Day 6 Cologne Day 1- like most major German cities you can see the effects of war and how it changed the architecture. Classic German structures have been heavily modified for today’s use and a vast melange of soulless 60’s and 70’s structures dot the area we are in. However, if you look close you can see the elegance that has been restored or re-envisioned. Looking forward to seeing what tomorrow will hold as the weather lets up.

Day Siete - Central America - Ruta de Flores El Salvador. Vibrant colonial vibes in the small@towns of Ruta de Flores (Ataco, Apaneca, etc). Coffee plantations and furniture makers dominates the region. Interesting to see that many of the structures were gifts from European nations looking to gain favor for coffee exports. Love seeing that city efforts in historical preset were just starting. Next stop Belize.

Day Six Latin America - San Salvador. Lots of development in town. Amazing colonial structures that date back to the 1500’s and late 1800’s. This is the future of Latin America happening before our eyes. Follow for more.

Exploring Nicaragua’s Ometepe Island. Spots of old colonial construction mixed with very simple structure and signs of new construction popping up. The carpentry and joinery is very impressive. Huge panels of old growth wood making way into tables and doors. Impressed now and curious to see what the next 20 yrs brings.

Grenada Day Dos- old growth wood making for some very large doors here. Colonial stone work dating back 500 years when the area was colonized. Touring through the Isletas (little islands) showed a dichotomy of luxury homes and simple structures, all of which took some serious operations to haul materials, labor and talent to these far flung collection of hundreds of little islands. Next stop San Juan del Sur.
