WHO DECIDED THE BED GOES THERE?

Walk into an empty bedroom and somehow, you already know where the bed belongs.
Against the wall. Usually centered.

But why?

Part of it is instinct. A solid wall behind us feels protected, while being able to see the doorway gives us awareness of who’s entering.

Part of it is architecture. Windows, closets, bathroom doors and outlets are often positioned around the wall where the architect expects the bed to live.

Part of it is simply space. Putting the biggest piece of furniture against a wall leaves the room open and easier to move through.

And part of it is habit.

We’ve arranged bedrooms this way for so long that we rarely question it.

But great design sometimes does.

Beds can float. Headboards can divide spaces. And sometimes the bed should face the view instead of the wall.

Maybe the better question isn't “Where does the bed go?”

It’s “How do you want the room to feel when you wake up?”
