I pace when I’m on the phone, so when I designed my garden, I built the path in a figure eight on purpose.

Most days, if I’m working from home, I’m out here taking calls and walking the same loop over and over again.

I love plants, design, houses, and thinking about how a space actually gets used. This was the before and after of making my own backyard work a little more like me.

The thing that’s been sticking with me lately is how often these two parts of my life overlap.

When I ask someone why they reached out to me about selling their home, I keep hearing some version of the same answer: they’ve seen what I’m doing in El Sereno.

The events. The local businesses. The Social Club. The people I’ve met along the way.

And it’s changed how I think about selling homes here.

A house isn’t separate from the neighborhood around it. There’s usually someone leaving behind a place they cared about, and someone else excited to make that place part of their own story.

That’s probably my favorite part of this work.

We hosted a Modernism Walk around the Silver Lake Reservoir, stopping at several homes with architectural significance and plenty of history behind them.

Along the way, we talked about when the houses were built, what remains original, and how the neighborhood developed around them. At a few of the stops, we also had the pleasure of hearing from a member of the Neutra Institute team Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design who shared more about the homes and the people who shaped them.

Buying your first house in Los Angeles isn’t just about finding one. It’s about choosing who helps you understand what you’re looking at.

This was our second architecture walk, and the waitlist was much longer than we expected. Now Javier and I are figuring out where we should walk next.
