Union Station Homeless Services

Union Station Homeless Services For over 50 years, USHS has been serving communities in the San Gabriel Valley, leading the fight to end homelessness. We know that housing ends homelessness.

As the region’s lead agency for coordinating homeless services, we serve 36 cities, from El Sereno to Pomona. Union Station Homeless Services, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is committed to helping homeless individuals and families rebuild their lives. es County that are leading the way to ending homelessness in our community. We are the San Gabriel Valley’s largest social service agency assisting homeless and very low-income adults and families. Since 1973, Union Station has helped rebuild the lives of thousands of people who were once homeless and without hope. The vision expressed four decades ago by the community volunteers who founded this agency still rings true today — every person deserves a life of dignity and a safe place to call home. With over 45 years of experience, we proudly offer a full continuum of nine programs throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Our core services include outreach, bridge housing, permanent housing, and employment. In addition, we offer basic needs such as meals and showers, and well as care coordination, benefits enrollment, and referrals to medical and mental health services. Over the years, we have learned some valuable lessons:

Homelessness has many faces
Union Station has effective solutions
and we simply cannot solve this issue alone. https://unionstationhs.org/about/about-us/

Emotions ran high last week as we celebrated the latest graduates of our Life Skills & Job Readiness cohort.

The room was full of everything that makes this work matter: diplomas and hugs, tears and laughter, powerful testimonies, brand-new professional headshots, and Chromebooks to carry them into their next chapter.

But the thing that filled the room more than anything else? Hope.

Hope that had been lost and found again.

As one graduate, Elizabeth, put it so beautifully: “I now have hope. I lost myself a little along the way, but I got to know me again through this class.”

This is the work. This is why it matters. And none of it happens without you.

Every gift you give helps fund programs that offer our neighbors more than just practical tools. It offers them a path back to themselves. Back to possibility. Back to a future they can believe in again.

To our newest graduates: we're so proud of you. Not just for finishing, but for showing up, doing the hard work, and choosing hope when it wasn’t easy. That takes courage.

Congratulations. We’re honored to walk this road with you. 💛

A huge thank you to and fam for spending time with us at our USHS Adult Center last week 💛

In partnership with , Anna joined our kitchen team to chop ingredients, prepare lunch, and serve a meal for our residents and community members.

We’re so grateful for partners and volunteers who show up with such warmth, humility, and care. Meals are more than food. They’re a reminder that our neighbors are seen, valued, and supported.

Thank you, Anna, for helping us create a little more connection around the table!

🏅This month we would like to highlight a longtime volunteer and former USHS employee :: drum roll please 🥁:: Katie! 🎉

Since 2022, Katie has been using art 🎨 to support the well-being of residents by creating spaces that foster imagination, focus, and self-expression.

During her sessions, they engage both creatively and critically, connecting through conversation and shared experiences.

Over time, they have formed meaningful bonds, and she values being part of her local community.

📢 Calling all high school juniors and seniors ready to make real impact!

What if high school students could spend a week learning from people who’ve experienced homelessness firsthand, and leave knowing how to actually do something about it?

That’s exactly what our H.O.U.S.E. Student Learning Intensive is:

• A week-long immersive summer advocacy and education program. No long lectures here!
• You’ll deepen your understanding of homelessness issues and solutions. You’ll be an expert in no time!

📚What topics will we cover?
• History of Homelessness
• Naloxone Training
• Community, Advocacy & Policy
• The Power of Public Perspective & Words
• People vs. Pathology

You’ll hear from our CEO, Katie Hill, community advocates, and people with lived experience.

Tag a junior or senior who cares deeply about their community below or share this post.

This could be the experience that shapes their path.

⏳ Applications due July 12, 2026. Link in bio. Sessions take place in Pasadena.

Julio Guevara has spent much of his life in survival mode.

He grew up in gang culture in the San Gabriel Valley and entered prison for the first time at 19. Over the years, incarceration became a pattern: four prison terms, with a fifth looming.

But as he faced the possibility of returning to prison again, something inside him shifted.

As Julio progressed through treatment, another challenge emerged: housing. His time in recovery housing was running out, and returning to his old environment could undo everything he was building.

Through a referral, Julio connected with Union Station Homeless Services and moved into interim housing at Casa Luna in El Sereno.

For the first time, he had a place that was his — not a motel room, not a couch, not a cell.

Read Julio’s story on The Way Home blog at the link in our bio.

Team USHS hit the pavement for Walk United LA 2026! 👟💙

Yesterday, our team laced up and joined the LA , , and so many others at and Hollywood Park, all committed to helping our neighbors thrive.

Together, we walked to support housing, education, and pathways from poverty to prosperity for students, families, and communities across LA County.

A huge thank you to everyone who represented USHS, supported our team, donated, or cheered us on along the way. Every step matters, and we’re grateful to walk this work forward together.

On April 30th, a group of 8 participants from the USHS Adult Center headed out to Lower Switzer Falls in the Angeles National Forest. Alongside two staff and two volunteers, the group worked together through steady uphill climbs and multiple creek crossings that were challenging at times, but fully doable.

Every participant made it to the waterfall, and some even took a swim. Reaching the waterfall together offered a break from routine and a chance to take in something different.

USHS provided lunches, backpacks, water bottles, hiking shoes, and socks so everyone could start the day prepared. It was a reminder that stepping outside the routines of shelter life even for a day can shift perspective, offering space to be seen not by circumstance, but by strength, capability, and presence.’

- Patrick K, USHS Care Coordinator

This was also was a chance to introduce some positive coping skills-and invite folks to move their bodies in a way that makes sense to them and a chance to build community. Studies show:

⌛️Spending just 120 minutes per week in nature is associated with significantly better health and well-being.
⛰ Hiking can help reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression while improving mood and self-esteem.
🍃Walking in nature has been linked to lower cortisol levels, improved attention, and better emotional regulation.
🤝Group outdoor activities can strengthen social connection and sense of belonging, both important for mental wellness and recovery.

Want to support more experiences like this? 🌿

Volunteer with USHS and help create opportunities for connection, wellness, and community beyond the shelter walls.
Whether it’s hiking trips, creative activities, or wellness programs, your time can make a lasting impact.

International Workers’ Day 🛠️ started as a demand, not a holiday. In 1886, workers across the United States organized for an eight-hour workday.

Today, May 1st is recognized globally, even in places that rarely agree on anything. It is a reminder that weekends, overtime pay, workplace safety laws, and basic protections were not given. They were negotiated, protested, and in many cases, fought for.

Work looks different now. Remote jobs, gig work, automation, AI. The questions are still familiar:

Who benefits from labor?
Who is protected?
Who is left out?
The conversation did not end. It changed shape.

And in the nonprofit homeless services sector, the work comes with its own weight. Limited resources, high stakes, real people at the center of everything. It is not easy work. Still, every day, our team shows up, figures it out, and keeps going.

This is not about looking back. It’s about understanding how we got here and what still needs work. And recognizing the people doing the work right now.
