Story time! 🥖
Long before my “sourdough era”, my great-grandfather and his brothers opened Garic’s Bakery in 1885 at 929 Decatur St. across from the French Market. They supplied bread to locals, restaurants, shipmen and Charity Hospital. In an effort to keep bread affordable for consumers, they began making “poor boy” loaves. Some say it was actually the Garic brothers who coined the term “poor boy” bread before the po-boy became a New Orleans classic. Although the three story Italianate building remains, Garic’s Bakery has since been replaced by one of the many French Quarter souvenir shops.
