Final preparations for a large scale native pollinator planting at the University of Rio Grande.

This is the third spraying of the year, and we're targeting all remaining cool-season non-native grasses and broadleaf weeds. Once complete, the field will be frost-seeded this winter to simulate the natural planting process for a prairie. If everything goes well, next year you will be able to come out and see a 15-acre stand of native grasses and wildflowers.

A little video about why "letting things go back to nature" doesn't work anymore. "No mow May" is a great thought, but it doesn't actually have the benefits you may think

Fall food plots to prepare for next year's pollinator plantings!

While prepping to plant soy beans years ago we sprayed out 2 acres of reeds canary grass and disced the field. What came up before our second round herbicide was a long list of natuve wildflowers and grasses that had been suppressed by the invasive grass. It would have been a sin to spray all of the milkweed, so we kept it and have maintained 2 acres of pollinators in that field.

Now, we are dealing with the rest of the field, which had even more invasive concerns. So to deal with them, we sprayed herbicide and are planting food plots this fall to hold the soil, provide hunting opportunities, and wildlife forage. In the spring, we will plant additional pollinators to increase our native early successional habitat. Using cover crops can be a great way to transition poor habitat into a more productive state.

Successful Japanese Knotweed treatment!

This was our first stab at treat this terribly destructive invasive species. So far, the results look promising!

Monarchs are here! It could be the last year's drought conditions or something else, but last year we had the lowest number of monarch sightings on our properties that we've ever had. But this year, though anecdotal, we have seen more monarch butterflies and caterpillars than ever before!

This little guy found his home on a Prairie Milkweed plant at the Twisted Vine Family Vineyard. After spraying out fescue fields in 2023 and 2024, we planted a Native mix on this ground and it looks amazing. But the proof that what we did was the right decision, is that we didn't plant Prairie Milkweed, it was in the seed bank waiting to be released from it's fescue prison.

Herbicides aren't always the bad guy. In the right circumstances, when used properly in accordance with a well thought out plan, herbicides can be the key to unlocking your habitat potential for monarchs and loads of other native species.

It's been a challenging few weeks since having a knee replacement in June. I haven't been able to do much walking, so habitat management has been largely off the table, but thankfully we have built an amazing team to keep up the hard work while I've been recovering.

But even a bumb knee can't keep our family out of the fields during blackberry season! We maintain a great trail system to access different areas of our farm with a vehicle, allowing me to get out in the evening with Alyssa and Henry to collect our favorite summer treat. And as you can see, the milkweed is blooming and the monarchs are starting to appear everywhere!

While I wish I could snap my fingers and be back to work, it's been a blessing to have this beautiful piece of Southeast Ohio and my family to help me get through the healing process.
