Pawleys Island has been called “Arrogantly Shabby” since the 1700s, when South Carolina rice planters built simple beach cottages here to escape the heat and mosquitoes of their plantations. No grand resorts, no flash — just weathered wood, hammocks between live oaks, and a slower kind of time. That spirit never left.

This time of year, the island is doing something quietly remarkable. Loggerhead sea turtles are coming ashore at night to nest in the dunes, just like they have for millions of years. By late summer, hatchlings will make their first crawl to the ocean under moonlight. If you walk the beach early enough, you might spot a roped-off nest marked by local volunteers — a small reminder that this stretch of sand is still wild, still sacred.

And maybe that’s why Pawleys feels the way it does. It’s the place where kids learn to ride waves on a boogie board, where grandparents tell the same stories on the porch every summer, where sandy feet and salty hair are just part of the day. The marsh glows gold at sunset. The pier fills with fishing lines and easy conversation. Nothing here rushes.
