Rental Registry Deadline – Oct. 1, 2024
The state’s deadline to register rental properties with the R.I. Department of Health (RIDOH) is October 1st, 2024. Per the law, landlords of both pre- and post-1978 rental properties must register their rental property on the RI Department of Health Rental Registry. Those who own rental properties built before 1978 must also have their units inspected for lead and obtain a lead certificate. Failure to comply with this law, will result in fines. However, RIDOH has agreed not to fine landlords immediately.
Please be advised, however, that tenants cannot be evicted for non-payment of rent until the rental unit is registered. RIDOH does not have any authority to delay enforcement of this law, only the judicial system or the General Assembly can do so.
RIAR’s legal and advocacy teams are working diligently on this issue. For clarification on the requirements, please watch this recorded webinar featuring representatives from the RI Department of Health.
