The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has confirmed a case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Zavala County, Texas. The detection was identified in a three-week-old calf and confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory on June 3, 2026. At this time, no additional cases have been confirmed in Texas.

USDA and Texas officials are taking immediate action to contain and eradicate NWS from the United States, following the strategies and actions outlined in the NWS Response Playbook.

In response, TAHC and the USDA have established an infested zone in the area, implemented animal movement restrictions, and expanded surveillance and fly-trapping efforts to prevent further spread. Targeted releases of sterile screwworm flies are also being used as part of the eradication strategy.

New World Screwworm larvae infest open wounds and can affect livestock, wildlife, pets, birds, and in rare cases humans. Animal owners are encouraged to closely monitor animals for wounds containing maggots or larvae, keep wounds clean and protected, and seek veterinary treatment immediately if an infestation is suspected.

Land owners are encouraged to report any suspected cases immediately.

First case of the new world Screwworm has been confirmed in the USA, specifically Zavala County and I believe we will learn soon another case in Frio County so the flys are here my friends. Watch your pets, livestock, & wildlife best you can as these flesh eating larva kill fast. Check in with your county agent, vet, TAHC, EWA, & TDA agencies for more info.

Was able to participate in today's Coldwell Banker D'Ann Harper Realtors Land & Ranch clay target shooting event, and our team took 2nd. The body condition of this small Nilgai breeding group appears satisfactory following the drought especially that momma cow. We have a substantial number of Nilgai Bulls at the WWR.

It's wonderful to see South Texas so green again. The Frio county area has received about as much rain already this year as all of last year's total of 11-12 inches.
