SEED TAG 1: HOW MANY WAYS IS THIS BAG OF PLOT SEED SCREWING YOU?
This is a clover mix from a big name food plot seed company. This bag is good for the owners of the company and the big shots they sponsor, but my money would never buy this.
1. Weight - You're only getting a 3.75 lb bag for the same price most clover blends are giving you 4 lbs. That's standard because clover is about 8 lbs an acre full rate. But this bag doesn't have 3.75 lbs of seed! More on that later.
2. Berseem - This is an annual, so you're gonna lose about 9% of the bag to winter.
3. Hard Seed - Notice the germination on the Marco Polo ladino is only 66%, with 28% more being hard seed (about 5% of the bag total). Hard seed won't germinate until after winter stratification, so in the planting year you're only getting 2/3 of the large leaf ladino you paid for.
4. Seed Coating - Clover needs a little bit of inoculant to help it produce nitrogen, but 34% coating is straight up theft. All that means is only 66% (2.5 lbs) of your bag is actual seed that will grow into plants.
5. Red Clover - At best you can usually get 2 years out of red clover, so you're losing that by year three unless you let it go to seed.
Seed Tag Math
So you only bought 3.75 lbs to start with. To you, it feels no different. To the company, that's 4 ounces they don't have to put in every bag. Then, you lose 34% to seed coating, another 5% to the hard seed that won't germinate this year, next year you get that 5% back but lose the 9% berseem clover dropping out after winter, and then lose the red clover 14% by year three. Don't forget you only started with 3.75 lbs rather than the standard 4 lbs for a standard clover half acre bag. That means in your planting year you only get 2.3 lbs of seed, in year two you're down to 2.1 lbs, and by year three you're down to 1.6 lbs.
Ever wonder why there's so many seed companies? $$$
What if I already planted this?
Make sure you let it go fully to seed next year before you mow it. You want to scatter all the free seed you can get...cuz this bag is designed to get you to buy more clover next year wondering why your plot looks thin. The owners will have a nice profit margin and vacation 😉
I'll be doing more breakdowns on seed tag ripoffs over the coming weeks. Hit the follow button if this was useful! The more you know!
