Statement from the City Manager's Office: City of Pell City Taking Action to Restore Residential Garbage Service Standards
The City of Pell City places a high value on the decency of services we provide to our residents, and the current performance by Meridian Waste has fallen short of that goal. We are acutely aware of the widespread service disruptions following their recent route changes, and we share the frustration of our citizens. This level of service is unacceptable and does not meet the standards of our agreement.
Before this rollout began, the City recognized potential risks and took steps to protect our residents. While the municipality did not have legal grounds to prevent the contractor from updating its internal systems, we actively worked to support its rollout. We supplemented communications by translating Meridian Waste’s data into a user-friendly online lookup tool. We also issued multiple notifications via social media to ensure residents were as prepared as possible for the transition.
We are acting in good faith according to our contract to resolve these issues, and we have provided Meridian Waste with formal direction regarding our strict service expectations. The City is prepared to enforce every protection, penalty, and legal remedy available within our agreement to ensure Meridian Waste fulfills its obligations to our citizens.
To ensure immediate accountability, the Pell City Street Department is working closely with Meridian Waste to verify proper service to our neighborhoods. We will not settle for anything less than the reliable service our residents were promised.
