Today, it may be easy to say, “It doesn’t affect me.”

It’s just a bridge.
It’s not my business.
Someone else will speak up.

But what happens when everyone thinks that way?

If we sit quietly today, the consequences may not be obvious tomorrow. But years from now, our town, our Main Street businesses, and the people we call neighbors may be the ones paying the price.

Communities don’t lose important things all at once. They lose them little by little, every time people decide it isn’t worth speaking up.

If we care about what Pender looks like tomorrow, we have to be willing to speak up today.

Silence is still a choice.

A man was trapped in a flood, waiting to be rescued.

A person offering help.
A piece of good advice.
An opportunity.
An open door.

We can spend so much time waiting for a “sign” that we miss the ones we’ve already been given.

Pay attention. Sometimes the way forward is quieter than we expected.

This is really a thing. Don’t wait on your loved ones home. It’s an overwhelming exhausting experience to have a deadline. If you need a pep talk, you can always call me.

Mom had lived in that house for 40 years.

Then suddenly, I had 30 days to empty it.

I remember standing in the hallway with her keys in my hand and looking around.

Her coat was still hanging by the door.

Her reading glasses were on the kitchen table.

There were closets I hadn't opened, a packed basement, an attic I didn't even want to think about… and a closing date that wasn't going to wait for me to be ready.

I sat down on the bottom step and cried before I packed a single box.

Because nobody tells you how strange it is to have a deadline for dismantling the home of someone you love.

Eventually, I figured out an order that made an impossible job feel a little more possible.

And there was one thing I'm VERY glad I handled before I started sorting everything else.
