THIS WEEK IN PENSACOLA HISTORY
On June 11, 1559 more than 1,500 soldiers, settlers and crew members boarded 13 ships in Vera Cruz, Mexico, bound for Pensacola Bay.

Led by Tristán de Luna y Arellano, the expedition set out to establish what would become the first European colonization attempt in the continental United States. After a two-month voyage, the fleet arrived in downtown Pensacola on August 15, 1559.

But history had other plans.

Just one month later, a powerful hurricane struck Pensacola Bay, destroying most of the ships and supplies needed for the colony to survive. What began with great promise became one of the most fascinating "what ifs" in American history.

A bronze monument honoring the leader of the 1559 expedition is located at Plaza de Luna at the south end of Palafox Street.

BREEZE AIRWAYS LAUNCHES INAUGURAL PENSACOLA TO SAN ANTONIO NON-STOP SERVICE.

PENSACOLA, Fla (June 10, 2026) If you've got business or pleasure "Deep in the Heart of Texas," you're in luck at Pensacola International Airport.

Breeze Airways flight 146, an Airbus A220, boarded 62 passengers this afternoon at 2:01pm for the airline's inaugural Pensacola to San Antonio twice weekly non-stop servce.

Breeze will return to Pensacola tonight, departing San Antonio as flight 147 at 4:53pm, arriving PNS at 6:43pm.

Thsi will be a Wednesday and Saturday service with an introductory fare of $69 one-way.

🚨BREAKING: The Florida Legislature has formally approved Governor Ron DeSantis’ bold proposal to eliminate property taxes for most primary homeowners across the state.

Both the House and Senate passed the measure with resounding support, sending the historic plan to voters for final approval on the November ballot.

If approved by Floridians, this would deliver massive tax relief to homeowners and mark a major victory for DeSantis and fiscal conservatives in the state.

✈️ Allegiant kicks off five new one-way routes today. Starting this week, travelers can fly direct between Huntsville; Omaha, Nebraska; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Louisville, Kentucky; and Springfield, Missouri, with one-way fares starting as low as $40.

The Huntsville route is making history as the only intrastate commercial airline route in Alabama. GUF Airport Director Jesse Fosnaugh says the flight will cut what’s typically a six-hour drive through the state to about an hour — often for less than the cost of a tank of gas, especially right now.

Flights operate up to twice weekly on most routes, with Oklahoma City service running up to three times weekly. Book flights, rental cars and hotels all in one place at Allegiant’s website.
