Everyone learns that St. Augustine is the oldest city in America, but there is an earlier chapter most people never hear, one that ended in disaster on the shores of Pensacola Bay. ⚓ In 1559, six years before St. Augustine was founded, a Spanish expedition tried to plant a permanent colony on Florida's Gulf coast.
The man leading it was Tristan de Luna y Arellano, who sailed into Pensacola Bay with roughly 1,500 soldiers, settlers, and workers aboard a fleet of ships heavy with supplies and high hopes. For a few short weeks it looked like Spain might build its foothold in North America right there. Then a monster hurricane roared in off the Gulf and shattered the fleet at anchor, sinking most of the ships and drowning the food stores along with the colonists' dreams. 🌊
Starvation and hardship followed, and within two years the survivors abandoned the settlement entirely. Had that hurricane held off, we might all remember Pensacola, not St. Augustine, as the birthplace of European Florida. Archaeologists have since found Luna's lost ships resting on the bottom of the bay, silent proof of a colony the history books almost forgot. 🏴
