"Yesterday, I heard a hard thud on my cottage window. When I went outside, a cedar waxwing was lying still on the deck. It had hit the glass and died.

Not long after, its mate showed up. It landed right beside the body and didn’t fly away. It hopped around it, looked down at it, and tilted its head, almost like it was waiting for the bird to wake up. It even let out small cries, soft and broken, as if calling for it.

Then something I’ll never forget happened. The mate stopped moving, lowered itself right next to the other bird, and pressed close until their heads touched. After a short while, it closed its eyes too and passed away.

Two birds, side by side, gone together. This moment showed me that animals can love, grieve, and choose to stay together, even in the end. We've a lot to learn from them."
