The City of Peoria and Peoria County are reminding community members to expect increases in energy rates this summer. Community members will begin to receive a letter from Ameren Illinois notifying customers of supply rate increases for the upcoming summer months.

As referenced in an earlier press release on April 26, rising prices and supply shortages are a concern in an 11-state region that includes Central Illinois. This has prevented Good Energy, our community’s energy aggregation supply program, which most of our residents and businesses utilize, from securing a contract starting in June. Therefore, participants will be returned to Ameren supply for the months of July and August at a minimum.

Customers do not need to take any action for the transition from the aggregate supplier of energy to Ameren during those months. Community members may receive correspondence from other energy supply companies offering different rates. Historically, the aggregated prices have remained the lowest for our residents. Customers who take no action will return to the aggregation supply program once the contract is signed.

“We realize families and businesses are struggling with inflation and cost increases in a variety of areas,” stated Peoria County Administrator Scott Sorrel. “Good Energy is working diligently to keep the interruption to the program to a minimum, with the goal of establishing a reasonable price and resuming energy supply in August.”

Energy markets have experienced a significant price spike through the Winter and Spring, and these increased prices are reflected in Ameren’s recently announced utility rates for residential and small business customers.

“We urge our community members, both residential and commercial, to look at their Ameren account and find the details of their particular rates for the upcoming months,” advised City of Peoria Manager Patrick Urich. “Some households and organizations may already have seen an increase; others should look to plan ahead for the summer months, which usually means increased usage.”

The Heart of Illinois 2-1-1 line is a local resource that residential customers can call to see if there are any programs that can assist with utility costs. The 2-1-1 phone number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The alternate phone number is 309-999-4029.

As we all deal with the Coronavirus pandemic, let’s not forget about our neighbors. If anyone needs anything but is concerned about leaving home please call the office. We’ve had some awesome residents step up and volunteer to do some errand running if needed, and LD and I are here too.
Haddad’s market in West Peoria is having special times for seniors to shop as well.

If you’ve been affected by the toilet paper shortage and are having to be inventive, please do NOT flush anything BUT toilet paper down the toilet. No wipes, paper towels or other products should be flushed. They WILL clog up the sewage lines.
