Mortgage Tip Monday

Has your mortgage payment ever gone up even though your interest rate stayed the same?

One of the most common reasons is an escrow shortage.

Your lender collects money each month to pay your property taxes and homeowners insurance. If either of those expenses increases—or not enough was collected during the year—your escrow account may come up short.

The result? Your monthly mortgage payment may increase to make up the difference.

The good news is that an escrow shortage doesn’t usually mean there’s a problem with your mortgage. It often reflects changes in property taxes, insurance premiums, or both.

If your payment unexpectedly changes, review your annual escrow analysis and don’t hesitate to ask your lender to explain it.

Knowledge is one of the best tools a homeowner can have.
