“About two or three years ago, we began considering a move to the Petoskey area for retirement. As a physically active couple who enjoy all four seasons, we specifically wanted a location with plenty of winter for skiing and snowshoeing.

Initially, we found the pricing and availability in the area disappointing. However, a friend mentioned the Pine Pond community, and after scheduling an appointment, we were very impressed with the design and roominess of the Nantucket unit.

We downsized from a 2,800-square-foot home to 1,526 square feet and couldn't be happier. Everyone who has visited—including contractors—has commented that the home exceeded their expectations. The high ceilings and crown moldings provide an elegant look, and the design elements offered just enough variety to personalize the space without being overwhelming.”

A century-old Petoskey business has finished the first 30 homes in a 128-unit manufactured housing community it’s developing in response to the region’s housing shortage that has pushed some local workers to live in campers.

The Manthei Group, a third generation portfolio of businesses owned by the Manthei family, hopes to complete the Pine Pond Homes development by 2030.

The project targets the Petoskey area’s middle-income earners, typically classified as those earning between 80% and 120% of area median income, who are increasingly priced out of the community as area home prices skyrocket.

Abe Manthei, director of missional development for The Manthei Group, said the company owns and operates several RV and mobile home parks in other states such as Arizona and California.

This is its first housing development in the Petoskey area, where the family’s ancestors, German immigrants Constance and Ferdinand Manthei, settled in the late 19th century and began various agricultural-based businesses.
