Last week, I got a behind-the-scenes look at some of the projects helping shape Petoskey’s future, and it was fascinating to see how much is happening beyond what most people notice day to day. It was indeed an opportunity to attend Northern Lakes Economic Alliance Development Spotlight Tour!

From historic buildings being reimagined to conversations about housing, local businesses, and community growth, there was a lot of discussion about what comes next for Northern Michigan.

One thing I always enjoy about events like this is seeing the vision before the finished product. It’s a reminder that every great space, neighborhood, and downtown destination starts with an idea—and people willing to invest in it.

Petoskey is growing thoughtfully, and it’s exciting to watch new opportunities take shape while preserving the character that makes this area so special.

Field Notes - Harbor Springs Cabin
May 8

Ice out. Finally, fully, ice out of the harbor.
The turkeys don’t move for my car.
The pudding stone chimney rises the full height of the log wall.
Inside: five paddles leaned against the wall.
One read “Camp Lakota.” Proof of summers on the big lake.

This cabin knows what it is.
Two bedrooms. Strong rental history. Buyers who move now don’t compete with the ones who arrive in July.
A fireplace like that doesn’t happen twice.
