The N.C. Forest Service Forest Health Program is pleased to announce a request for applications for the Ash Protection Program (APP) – 2026. Ash is an important urban species, and the APP will reimburse approved municipalities, communities and organizations for the treatment of ash trees to protect against the emerald ash borer in North Carolina.

Applications will be accepted beginning March 2, 2026, and ending April 3, 2026.

Of all the tools we have to manage our lands, prescribed fire is easily the biggest bang for your buck! Depending on what your management goals are will determine which season is best to perform these on your property. We’re approaching the time in NC where a burn can ensure a flush of native warm season grasses which are vital habitat for ground nesting birds such as the wild turkey allowing both food and cover for young poults as they grow. If you’re not comfortable performing the burn yourself reach out to the N.C. Forest Service for assistance and training.

February is Prescribed Fire Awareness Month.

Prescribed fire is the carefully planned use of low-intensity fire under predetermined weather and fuel parameters to obtain specific management objectives. Prescribed fire is a low-cost and effective forest management tool to help our forestland thrive and remain healthy.

The N.C. Forest Service offers a certified burner training program for landowners to learn how to responsibly conduct prescribed burns.

Just a little heads up for all our landowners out there. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Fire danger is elevated statewide. Outdoor burning is NOT recommended. Most dry grasses, dead leaves and other vegetative debris could easily ignite and spread quickly.

Discard cigarette butts, matches and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Use extreme caution when handling potential ignition sources such as machinery and farm equipment.
