🛑 STOP Before You Tile That Tub! Here’s the Ultimate Prep Checklist 🛑It is incredibly tempting to jump straight to the fun part — laying out that beautiful new tile. But the top 10% of successful DIYers know that lasting, high-quality results require a systematic approach. A truly professional job isn't about what you see on the surface; it's built on a solid, unshakeable foundation.If you want to scale up your DIY skills and avoid catastrophic water damage, tear-out in three years, your tub surround must look like this before a single piece of tile goes up. Let’s break down the system:
​1. The Right Foundation (Cement Board)
Take a look at the gray boards in the initial photos. That is a fiber cement board (like Hardiebacker).
The Rule: Never use standard drywall in a wet zone.
The Detail: Notice how the boards are systematically laid out, cut to fit tightly around the plumbing fixtures, and properly fastened to the studs.
​2. Tape & Mud Every Joint
The water is relentless, and it will find the weakest link. The weakest links are your seams and corners.
The Mesh: See the grid-like tape on the seams and corners? That is special alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh tape. Standard drywall tape will disintegrate behind tile.
The Mud: Once taped, every single seam, corner, and the edges of your shower niche must be smoothed over with a layer of thinset mortar. This unifies the walls into one solid, continuous backing.
​3. The Non-Negotiable: Waterproofing
This is the step most amateurs skip, and it’s the most critical point of failure. Cement board is water-resistant, but it is NOT waterproof. It won't rot, but moisture can wick right through it into your wood studs.
Painting it Red: Those final photos showing the bright red walls? That is a liquid waterproofing membrane (like RedGard).
Full Coverage: It is painted over the entire cement board, thickly coating every mortared seam, corner, and the entire inside of the recessed niche. Once this cures into a rubbery shell, water is completely locked out.
The Bottom Line: Building a successful project means establishing the right principles from the ground up. Don't take shortcuts on what is hidden behind the walls. Take the time to execute this prep system correctly, and your tile job will stand the test of time!
