The building's name, The Penn Reading, was chosen to reflect the neighborhood's rich history which was once an essential location to the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Company (P&R). The noticeable curvature of the building and retail storefront, designed by , serves as an homage to the railway roundhouse once located at the Port Richmond terminal.
