Inflation at 3% in September is not yet contained. But the Federal Reserve according to the predictions market is set to cut short-term rates two more times before the year end. The Fed shifted its focus away from inflation and into the softening job market. The September jobs data are not out due to government shutdown but may indeed be negative.

In addition the housing shelter component of consumer price inflation (essentially rent growth) is showing moderation. Up 3.6% from a year ago, the slowest gain in about 4 years. Further deceleration in this figure is likely based on private sector data showing virtually no rent growth.

Still because of the loosening monetary policy at a time of not fully contained inflation the gold prices - due to the inflation hedge characteristics - are at super high levels. Hard to believe that the gold price per troy ounce was in $200s just 25 years ago and now at above $4,000.

Aside from gold, other precious metals and jewelry, real estate can also serve as a good inflation hedge. One wonders if real estate prices could get a lift. Certainly the high gold prices is suggesting a lower chance of a sustained big home price correction.

In the meantime be cautious of the hawkers who want to buy gold from the elderly. Some older people may not be aware of the current market price and may think selling at a double or triple the price of what they paid for is a good deal.

I am sharing this post from LinkedIn from Dr Lawrence Yun, Cheif Economist at National Association of REALTORS® because I want people to be aware of the current value of gold. I was quite astounded when I read this. Deb

St. Luke’s Gun Buyback Event

August 3rd, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

5421 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA, 19144

Phoebe Griswold was originally told she couldn’t do it. Organize a gun buyback event? Pay people to turn in their guns?

No one who knows Phoebe would ever bet against her. Did she ever prove the naysayers wrong!

Last year St. Luke’s raised a total of $22,000. $200 gift cards were paid for each gun turned in which means 110 fewer guns—including 4 AK-47s--- would never kill anyone, especially children. Sadly, more people showed up with guns than there was money to pay for them.

Let’s make sure that does not happen again this year!

Phoebe said that most of the guns that were turned in were guns from homes. “Grannies will bring a gun in not even knowing it’s loaded. They feel safe turning them in to a church because they know no questions are asked,” Griswold said. She added that these are guns adults buy and kids find and play with, unaware that they’re loaded and dangerous. Last year, 23 children were killed by guns in Philadelphia. There were a total of 387 other gun homicides in the city.

Here’s more information from St. Luke’s:

Since the start of 2024, there have been over 261 mass shootings (4 or more victims) reported in America. Thoughts and prayers are not enough. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Germantown has partnered with the Father’s Day Rally Committee and the City Council of Philadelphia, to host a gun buyback event on its campus on Saturday August 3, 2024, from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

The primary entrance to any house deserves an attractive aesthetic with reliable security. Property owners often select thick, hardwood materials because they provide curbside appeal and durable strength. Steel doors remain something of an afterthought because they are more closely associated with c...
