Exhibitions at the African American Museum in Philadelphia

This is your final opportunity to see Afrofuturism in Costume Design, presented by Ruth E. Carter at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. The exhibition showcases personal sketches and award-winning fashions, including cinematic costumes from hit movies like Black Panther and Sinners.

Crayfish Party! is an annual rite of passage at the American Swedish Historical Museum as hungry revelers feast on a buffet of tasty red crustaceans (known as kräftor in Sweden) and sing until the wee hours.

The Nordic tradition, which started in the 1500s, is a full-on party, complete with drinking songs, paper lanterns adorned with smiling moons, and funny hats and bibs. Additional food items include Swedish meatballs, beet salad, cheese pie and more.

Vibe: A seafood lover’s dream mixed with a moonlight serenade.

Third Thursday at the Navy Yard

Sometimes coming in third isn’t a consolation prize. Third Thursday at the Navy Yard takes over Chapel Plaza, a new 35,000-square-foot outdoor community space, for a monthly meet-up series that runs through October.

Lingering is the norm here, thanks to a relaxed atmosphere filled with rotating food trucks, drink vendors, live music and local artisans.

This week’s lineup includes Tex-Mex fare from El Tlaloc, cheesy melts from Moocheeze and preservative-free pound cake from Poundcake Heaven. Also, keep an eye out for award-winning brews from Germantown favorite Attic Brewing Company.

Don’t miss: Basic Cable Band, performing live, playing synth-pop and hair metal ballads from the 1980s.

The Sound of America at FringeArts

What if Benjamin Franklin’s kite-and-key experiment actually unleashed rock ‘n’ roll and ol’ Ben became America’s first rock star? That’s the premise behind The Sound of America.

Wrapping up its world premiere right in the shadow of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge at FringeArts, the rock musical rooted in American history features 23 original songs eager to become anthems.

Rising Up: Rocky and the Making of Monuments at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

This is officially the final bell! Inspired by one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of Philadelphia — the Rocky Statue — this brand-new exhibition explores the concept of monuments: Why we make them. Who gets one. And the role they play in society.

This is a love letter to Philly’s real boxing history, with long overdue tributes to Joe Frazier now housed inside and outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art, including the relocation of his bronze statue at the base of the Rocky Steps.

Curated by Paul Farber, co-founder of Monument Lab and the host of NPR and WHYY’s acclaimed podcast The Statue, the expansive exhibit covers 2,000 years of history and features over 150 artifacts and works of art.
