This Paris church holds one of the largest mosaics in the world. Inside Sacré-Cœur, the apse mosaic spans over 4,700 square feet and was completed in 1923. It’s one of the first things you see, and it’s hard to look away.

Most people come here for the view over Paris, but the interior tells a very different story. The basilica was built after the Franco-Prussian War as a symbol of national reflection, not just religion. Construction started in 1875 and took nearly 40 years to finish.

The mosaic shows Christ with open arms, surrounded by saints and historical figures tied to France. It was designed to make an impression, and it still does. Even if you’re not religious, the scale and detail are what stop people in their tracks.

If you visit, go early in the morning or later in the evening. Midday gets crowded fast, especially around the dome and entrance. And remember, this is still an active place of worship, so there’s a certain quiet expected once you’re inside.
