Mortgage Rates Jumped 83 Basis Points in a Month. Here’s What That Means for Buyers and Sellers

Mortgage rates have moved sharply higher over the past month and the impact on homebuyers is bigger than the change in the rate might suggest.

According to Mortgage News Daily, the average top tier 30 year fixed mortgage rate was 6.75% on August 26, 2026. By September 29, it had climbed to 7.58%.

That’s an increase of 83 basis points in just over a month.

For buyers, that translates directly into higher monthly payments and reduced purchasing power.

For sellers, it means the pool of buyers who can afford their home or who perceive their home as a good value, may have changed dramatically in only a matter of weeks.
