My son bought fireworks that we lit Saturday night (meaning he lit them and I got to watch, LOL). This is the "finale". Our new neighbors across the street came out, which made it more enjoyable. It reminded me of growing up in Southern California, when we had a big neighborhood block party every July 4th at Uncle Bobby's. Good fun. Good memories.

Did you know we almost lived in "Pumpkinville"? 🎃

It’s true! Back in the late 1860s, when a rugged pioneer named Jack Swilling established a small farming community along the Salt River, locals couldn't agree on what to officially name the town.

The top contenders?
👉 Stonewall (Swilling wanted to name it after a Confederate general)
👉 Salina (after the Salt River)
👉 Pumpkinville (the town's literal nickname at the time because of the wild pumpkins growing along the irrigation canals!)

Thankfully, an eccentric, well-educated French explorer named "Lord" Darrell Duppa stepped in.

Looking out across the valley, he saw the ancient, abandoned canals built by the Hohokam people centuries prior. He predicted that a great new civilization would rise from the literal ruins and ashes of the culture before it.

He suggested "Phoenix"—and the name became official in May 1868. 🦅
