We're proud to share that our recent build has been featured in the Iconic Design Awards. This Paradise Valley spec home was built to custom standards, and it shows in every detail, from the hand-troweled plaster and travertine to the reclaimed wood and the central courtyard with its pool and spa, all brought together in a Spanish Colonial design that feels timeless.

This backyard was designed to have everything you could need built in. A deep, low-slung roofline and brick columns carry straight from the house onto the covered patio, keeping the indoor and outdoor spaces connected. A checkerboard tile patio anchors the fire feature just off the pool, giving the hardscape a bit of personality against all that brick and travertine. The pool sits low against a sloped, grass-covered yard, with the Phoenix mountains rising just beyond the property wall.

The entry door does more work than almost any other single element on a home's exterior.

The materials and style shift with each project, but the standards don't. A great door has real weight, whether that's solid wood, iron, or steel and glass, and hardware that feels as substantial as it looks. The finish has to hold up to years of sun and weather without losing its character, and the scale has to be right for the facade it sits in, neither swallowed by the entry nor overwhelming it.

Beyond the physical details, the door sets an expectation for what's inside. A hand-carved wood door with forged pulls tells a different story than a clean pivot door in steel and glass, and either way, that story starts before a guest ever crosses the threshold. A well-built entry changes the first impression of a home.

The Berneil home was built with character in mind, and that comes through even in the smallest spaces of the house. Each bathroom brings that character to life through custom tile work, hand-laid piece by piece. The result is a room that feels intentional down to the smallest detail, from the pattern choice to the way the grout lines fall. It's a small detail in the scope of an entire home, but it's exactly the kind of detail that separates a house that was designed from one that was simply built.

The kitchen at Berneil carries the same Spanish Colonial character that runs through the rest of the home. Plaster walls, hand-laid tile and reclaimed wood beams set the tone overhead, while travertine grounds the room underfoot. The same materials that shape the courtyard and the rest of the house are carried straight into the working heart of it.

The casita at Berneil is attached, and that was a deliberate break from how these usually get done. Detached guest quarters look good on a plan, but the feedback from our custom clients has been consistent for years: nobody wants to cross a courtyard in the dark, in the rain, or in a robe at six in the morning. Attaching it keeps the space fully private and independently accessible without asking guests to go outside to get to it.

It also means the room earns its keep the rest of the year. When there are no guests, it converts to a home gym or a pool house without any of it feeling like a compromise. A guest suite that sits empty ten months out of the year is square footage the family paid for and doesn't use.

In the backyard of Berneil, chiseled-edge travertine wraps a clean-lined pool and raised spa, its checkerboard mosaic face giving it a boutique-hotel edge you won't find in a standard build. Wood-framed loungers line the water, angled to catch the pool by day and the western sky come sunset.

A backyard that feels like you're poolside at a tropical boutique hotel, without ever leaving home.

The Paradise Valley Hillside sits directly at the base of Camelback Mountain. The architecture was designed to match the site rather than compete with it. Rough-cut stone wraps the front elevation, paired with stucco, clay tile roofs, and steel-framed windows with deep blue shutters, drawing from the Tuscan and Spanish architectural traditions that have always read as appropriate against this terrain.

The stone color was selected to pull directly from the red sandstone of the mountain itself, so the home reads as part of the landscape rather than placed on top of it. As the light moves across Camelback through the day, the stone walls of the home shift with it, warm and golden in the morning, deep red at sunset, and lit from within as evening settles in.

Berneil answers a question that comes up on nearly every custom project we build: where does everyone go once the party starts? The main gathering space handles the adults, open and connected to the kitchen so the room stays together. Off to the side, an oversized pocket door closes off a flexible entertainment space for media or the kids, which means both groups get their own night without anyone being sent to a back bedroom.

The guest suite works the same way, sized and positioned to function as an attached casita, gym, pool house, or any other flexible-use space, depending on what the family needs it to be. Twenty years of custom work taught us that flexibility is what people ask for after they move in, not before. Building it in from the start is the difference.
