In order to prevent pipes from freezing, it is advisable to let cold water drip from a faucet that is served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe, even at a slow rate, helps prevent the pipes from freezing. If you plan on being away from home during cold weather, it is recommended that you leave the heat on, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F, and disconnect any hoses from outdoor faucets.
