One of the best slow drives in the Smokies barely asks you to leave your car. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a 5.5-mile one-way loop just past traffic light 8 in Gatlinburg, winding past glimpses of old-growth forest, preserved log cabins and gristmills, and a rock face called the Place of a Thousand Drips that trickles right beside the road. It's narrow and slow by design, so buses, trailers and motor homes aren't permitted, which is a big part of why it stays so peaceful. Go after a good rain, when the creek the road is named for really does roar.

Mountain Blessings is a one-bedroom log cabin on Chapel Mountain in Pigeon Forge, just off the Parkway. Sleeps five. Hot tub on the covered deck, fireplace inside, mountains out the front.

Nights still open: Monday the 14th — that's tomorrow. Then Monday the 21st, Tuesday the 22nd, Wednesday the 23rd and Thursday the 24th. And Sunday the 4th of October.

Any week now, the Smokies get their most delicate visitors of the year. Monarch butterflies — four inches across, weighing less than half a gram — pass through the park from about mid-September into late October, on a trip of as much as 2,800 miles from the U.S. and Canada down to central Mexico. Here's the part that gets us: no single monarch makes the round trip. The generation flying south this month can live up to nine months, while the generations before it lived just two to six weeks — so the butterflies crossing these ridges have never once seen the forest they're headed for, and they go anyway. Cades Cove is the classic place to watch for them over the open fields, and Cataloochee and Oconaluftee are good too; the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont invites the public to help tag them each fall.

On Chapel Mountain the mornings change before the leaves do. Sometime around now you take your coffee out onto the deck and the air has an edge to it that wasn't there in August — and the mountains are doing the thing they're named for.

Mountain Blessings has four nights in a row open the week of the 21st: Monday the 21st, Tuesday the 22nd, Wednesday the 23rd and Thursday the 24th. Sooner than that, Sunday the 13th is open, and Monday the 14th with it. Wednesday the 9th and Thursday the 10th are on the calendar as well.

The fireplace is the part that starts to matter once the mornings go like this. The hot tub is out on the deck. One bedroom, three beds, room for five.

Labor Day Monday is still open at Mountain Blessings, and so are the three nights that follow it.
That's the quiet half of the holiday. Everyone else is driving home Monday afternoon; you've still got the hot tub, the fireplace, and Chapel Mountain going quiet around you. Pigeon Forge is down the hill whenever you want it.
Also open: the nights of Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd, this week. And Sunday the 13th and Monday the 14th — check out Tuesday and you're at Dollywood for September 14, opening day of the Harvest Festival.
Sleeps five. One bedroom, three beds, up on Chapel Mountain in Pigeon Forge.

Roll your window down on the North Carolina side of the park this month and you might hear it: the bugle of a bull elk. The rut runs from early September into late October, and that high, carrying whistle is how a bull announces himself across a valley at first light. It's a sound that almost didn't survive here — elk were hunted out of these mountains, the last one in Tennessee by the mid-1800s, until the park brought 25 of them back to Cataloochee Valley in 2001. Look for them around Cataloochee, Oconaluftee, or Balsam Mountain, early morning or near dusk, when they come out to graze. Two things the rangers ask: keep at least 25 yards back — it's federal law, and a rutting bull is unpredictable — and don't walk out into the fields; stay by the roadside. Bring binoculars and let them have the meadow. 🦌

Up here the evening comes in two halves. The first one happens on the deck.

Mountain Blessings is on Chapel Mountain — ridge out front, a hot tub and a swing on the deck. When it cools off, the fireplace takes the second half. Sleeps five. Pigeon Forge is a short run down the hill, and it stays down there.

The midweek nights are the ones still open.

Some cabins around Sevierville went up last year. This one didn't.
The Carver's House is the historic one — set back on terraced grounds under mature trees, with the woods behind it. Hot tub and fire pit outside, fireplace indoors.

The weekend crowd leaves on Sunday. That's the part of the week we'd keep for ourselves.

The Art Loft is one open room for two just off the Spur — a hot tub outside and a whirlpool bath in, which is most of the evening taken care of. Pigeon Forge one way, Gatlinburg the other, neither far enough to plan around.

The stretch from Sunday into the back half of the week is open right now, and there's a discount showing on the listing — you'll see it once you put your dates in.

The best nights up here are the ones nobody takes time off for.

Mountain Blessings sits up on Chapel Mountain with room for five, a hot tub on the deck and a fireplace inside for when the evening turns. Pigeon Forge is down the hill when you want it and completely out of earshot when you don't.

The quiet stretch between weekends is wide open right now — and it's the version of this place we'd pick for ourselves.
