The Kennedy Krieger Institute is planning a $250 million expansion that will transform a patch of green space into a 10-story facility for people suffering from complex neurological and developmental conditions.

The East Baltimore health system plans to build a 220,000-square-foot Innovative Care Center next to its outpatient center at 801 N. Broadway. The facility will primarily be paid for with donor funds, but the project has also received $6.75 million in state funding so far, including a $4 million grant approved during a Feb. 18 Board of Public Works meeting. The Johns Hopkins-affiliated institution works with patients suffering from complex neurological disorders and disabilities who have rehabilitation needs that go beyond what most traditional hospitals can provide.

f you’re familiar with Morgan State University’s campus, then the 8-foot statue of Frederick Douglass that stands in front of Holmes Hall comes to mind. Completed in 1956 by James E. Lewis, former chair of the Morgan State Art Department, the sculpture remains a symbol of artistic excellence and cultural pride. Lewis, who led the department for 36 years, made a lasting impact at Morgan by establishing the James E. Lewis Museum of Art. His work became part of the university’s growing legacy and its enduring commitment to fostering a sense of privilege, passion, and purpose in collecting and preserving African American art.
