My experience has been that it can take 6 months to one year before the bank takes back a home, and owners can do a lot in that time to avoid foreclosure. Remember, the banks are in business to lend money, not own homes. Believe it or no, they WANT to work it out with you.
Will it be like 2007 again? Not likely, but don't ignore your personal situation- do your research and get advise so you can create your own best possible outcome.
