What’s sort of funny about this is that in my experience, the people who think it is a good idea to go it alone are generally the least equipped to do it successfully. The ones who have the skills and experience to reasonably manage on their own generally know enough to know they don’t want to. I love irony.

As a real estate agent, I've read numerous articles and posts about the proposed NAR settlement over the last several days. I've talked with friends and partners and clients about what's going on and what this settlement might do. It's clear to me that as an industry, we've largely done this to ourselves. A lot of consumers simply do not understand the value agents bring, nor how we work or get paid. They don't understand how buyer agency evolved and why it's important. They don't understand how to evaluate an agent's competency and effectiveness. That's all on us. We need to do better at communicating our value.

For my consumer and client friends, please know that there is an abundance of misinformation in the media right now. Even large, well-known media outlets are getting parts of this thing very wrong. I've read very few articles that don't contain inaccuracies or wild speculation about the future of real estate. The truth is that this settlement (like it or not) addresses a problem, and though I'm not sure it's the right problem or the right solution to the wrong problem, it's out there and it will change at least something about how agents work and how consumers buy and sell homes. Change often produces winners and losers, and while I have some ideas about which groups of consumers and agents might be headed into each category, it's really too early to say. I'm happy to talk about it with anyone who is interested though...reach out and let's grab a drink.
