Did you know?

When you sign a lease and receive a bonus payment or collect royalty income, it is considered "ordinary income" and taxed at your current tax rate; generally between 25-39.6%.

However, when you sell your oil and gas rights, it is considered a capital gain. If you have owned the asset for longer than one year, it is considered a long-term capital gain and generally taxed between 15-20%. This savings alone could be huge for you.
