Za'kiyah House

Za'kiyah House We demonstrate they aren’t alone, and holistic, understanding support awaits them to engage in a better way of life.

Mission

Our Mission at Za’kiyah House is to reduce homelessness, recidivism, and addiction through caring relationships, holistic community support, and necessary tools to empower individuals to find freedom. Organization Description

Za’kiyah House is a black-led, power-building organization that provides support services to persons experiencing homelessness, drug addiction, and re-entry in Pitt

sburgh. For over six years, Za’kiyah House has coordinated partnerships and resources to address the needs with minimal financial resources, and strong community partnerships. We began with drug recovery outreach events alongside cross-sector community partners, and have since grown to include two sober transitional houses, a life skills workshop series, a support group for grieving parents (Come Heal with Me), and mutual aid where we’re able to provide support. Our two locations offer comprehensive case management, counseling and crisis intervention, resources and referrals, education, and support groups in an effort to break the cycle of poverty by addressing its root causes. We recognize the relationship between incarceration, drug abuse and homelessness and the special need to address individuals facing these three conditions, empower them, and surround them with a supportive community. Unlike most facilities, we are run in community contexts, with staff connected to the population we serve as survivors of the same systems they are navigating and residents of the areas where many of our clients live. With this cultural competence, our staff is uniquely able to empower individuals, while modeling that they too can successfully live a life full of possibilities. Our housing services benefit people returning from jail, prison, or rehab—or referrals from other agencies supporting populations without stable housing. Our residents are between 18-65 years old and have a baseline ability to physically care for themselves (and as it pertains to their mental health and behavioral presentations). The population we serve is 90% Black from low income house holds.

Trust can be rebuilt: but it happens through many honest choices, not one perfect moment. 💜

If you’re in recovery, returning home, or rebuilding relationships after incarceration, start small:

• Tell the truth, even when it feels uncomfortable.
• Show up when you say you will.
• Keep the promises you make: especially the small ones.
• Apologize sincerely and make amends through your actions.
• Give your loved ones room to heal and rebuild trust at their own pace.

Some people may need time before they feel safe believing again. That is not always rejection. It may be part of their healing, too.

Be patient and kind with yourself as you grow. Your past explains what you’ve been through, but it does not have to define your future. Every consistent, honest choice gives the people who love you another reason to believe again.

During National Recovery Month, Za’kiyah House is grateful to stand alongside our partners Sojourner House and Crossroads in supporting healing, reentry, and lasting recovery. Share this with someone who may need encouragement today.

Labor Day weekend can bring cookouts, family gatherings, and social events where old pressures may show up. You can prepare for those moments without over-explaining yourself.

Before you go, decide how you will respond if someone offers alcohol or substances. Try: “No thank you, I’m protecting my recovery.” A respectful no is enough.

Stay close to a supportive person when you can, and keep your sponsor, peer, or counselor a message away. Make a ride and exit plan before the event. You are allowed to leave early if the environment becomes uncomfortable or unsafe. You are also allowed to decline an invitation altogether.

Boundaries are not rude. They protect your peace and your recovery. You deserve understanding, support, and spaces where your progress is respected.

The Sanctuary, with community partners Sojourner House and Crossroads, is here to support people practicing these skills together. Inbox Za’kiyah House or The Sanctuary to participate in National Recovery Month Daily Support or learn more.

Legal challenges can feel overwhelming: but you do not have to face them alone. 💜

Outstanding fines, court obligations, legal paperwork, records, and questions about expungement can all be part of the recovery and reentry journey. A record or a past mistake does not define your future.

Za’kiyah House helps connect people in the Pittsburgh area with legal-support resources and guidance as part of whole-person, holistic recovery support. With the right information, trusted connections, and encouragement, you can begin clearing hurdles and moving forward with greater stability and hope. ✨

If you want to participate in National Recovery Month support, learn more, or get connected to legal-support resources, inbox Za’kiyah House. We’re here to help you take the next step. 🤝🏾

A difficult moment does not mean you are failing at recovery or moving backward. It means you are human: and you deserve care, support, and someone willing to listen. 💜

As we recognize 988 Day on September 8 and World Su***de Prevention Day on September 10, let’s remember that recovery and crisis care belong together. The 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential, and available 24/7/365 in the United States. Call or text 988, or chat online at 988lifeline.org. Trained counselors are there to listen without judgment.

If you’re supporting a loved one in recovery, keep 988 handy and reach out when you’re worried about someone. Supporting another person does not mean carrying the weight alone.

At The Sanctuary, Za’kiyah House, Sojourner House, and Crossroads, we believe caring relationships and community are essential to healing the whole person. Reaching out is not a weakness: it’s a sign of strength and a step toward staying connected.

Please inbox The Sanctuary to participate in National Recovery Month Daily Support or to learn more. And gently share this message with someone who may need the reminder today. 🤍

At the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, we understand that life’s challenges can sometimes be difficult. Whether you’re facing mental health struggles, emotional distress, alcohol or drug use concerns…

Healing looks different for everyone: and it begins by listening. 💜

At Za’kiyah House, residents are not defined by their past. Their voices, goals, lived experiences, and pace help shape the support they receive each day.

Resident-centered healing means creating space for honesty, dignity, accountability, and hope. It means walking alongside one another through challenges and celebrating every step toward stability and freedom. 🤝🏾

During National Recovery Month, we’re honoring the courage it takes to begin again and the caring relationships that make recovery possible.

We’re grateful to stand alongside our partners, Sojourner House and Crossroads, in supporting recovery and stronger communities.

If you or someone you love uses substances, carrying naloxone (Narcan) and having fentanyl test strips nearby are acts of care, not judgment. 💜

Naloxone can help reverse an opioid overdose, including overdoses involving fentanyl. Fentanyl test strips can help detect the presence of fentanyl, though they cannot tell you how much is present or guarantee safety. Never use alone, keep naloxone close, and call 911 during a suspected overdose. Give naloxone, place the person on their side, and stay with them until help arrives.

In Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, free naloxone and fentanyl/xylazine test strips are available through Pennsylvania’s Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs Overdose Prevention Program. Visit pa.gov and search “Find Overdose Prevention Supplies” to locate a nearby partner, or ask about walk-in, pickup, delivery, and mail-to-home options. Prevention Point Pittsburgh can also help connect community members with supplies and support.

At Richards Place in Homewood and Donnelle Safe Haven in North Braddock, we believe recovery grows in safe, stable, caring environments. Za’kiyah House, alongside partners Sojourner House and Crossroads, is committed to sharing resources that help our community stay here, stay supported, and keep moving forward. 🫶🏾

Every time we show up for recovery, second chances, and healing, the impact reaches farther than we may ever see. 💜

A listening ear can restore hope. A caring relationship can open the door to change. One person’s support can strengthen a family, and one supported family can help transform an entire neighborhood.

That’s the power of community impact. Together, we can create a ripple effect of compassion, accountability, healing, and freedom throughout Frankstown.

Join us for Recovery on Frankstown on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 12PM–4PM in the Frankstown Avenue area of Pittsburgh.

Hosted with Sojourner House, with Za’kiyah House and Crossroads as co-hosts and partners, this gathering is about showing up and standing together. 💜

🌱 Recovery is not a straight line: and every step forward matters.

Some wins are big and visible. Others are quiet: choosing yourself, making it through a hard day, asking for help, keeping an appointment, setting a boundary, or beginning again.

Progress may not always feel steady, but that does not make it any less real. Your journey is worthy of patience, compassion, and celebration. This National Recovery Month, let’s honor the small wins that keep us moving forward and remind one another that no one has to walk this road alone. 💜

What small win are you celebrating this week? Share it in the comments so we can celebrate with you! 🎉
