5 May Day spring home maintenance tips:
1. AC covers - Don't forget to remove them before you fire up your compressor, or you might fry your unit.
2. Filters - The changing seasons remind us to change or clean our furnace, AC, and air-purifier filters.
3. Knotweed - There's tons of info online, but the short answer is it takes over and is NOT easy to kill! But if you yank it up now and a few more times this summer (with as much of the roots as possible) you can control it. Don't compost it. Even a tiny sliver of it can survive your composter and start a new stand. Some people eat the young shoots and leaves--it's high in antioxidants and useful against the bacteria that causes Lyme disease (be careful, though...it's a favorite target of pesticide sprays, which are poisonous and, btw, don't really work). If you just let it do its thing, though, its roots can actually bore through the foundation of your home (I've seen it). So pull it, and, if you don't eat it :) either burn it or throw it away.
4. Downspouts - DURING heavy spring and fall rains grab an umbrella and inspect your gutters and downspouts. If they aren't doing their job, they're clogged, or disconnected it can take just a season or two to soften your foundation, allow storm water pe*******on into your basement, invite termites, and cause structural problems.
5. "What's that plant called?" - Get a plant-identifier app on your phone so you can scan that leaf and say, "Why, that's toxicodendron radicans, of course!"...otherwise known as poison ivy. Yep, time to stock up on some poison ivy soap (we use Tecnu). Wear gloves and long sleeves if you pull it, and don't compost OR burn that one, garbage only please.
