🏡 Buying a home is a huge milestone for many people, but it can come with some additional costs like Private Mortgage Insurance, often known as PMI. This insurance can be a bit confusing, but don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you! 😊

PMI is insurance that you, as a homeowner, might have to pay if you can’t make a 20% down payment on your home. It doesn’t protect you, the buyer—it protects the lender in case you can’t make your payments. Lenders see you as a higher risk if your down payment is less than 20%, and PMI gives them extra security.

So, when is PMI required? 🤔 Typically, if you’re buying a home with a conventional loan and have less than 20% saved, PMI will be part of your mortgage payment. Some programs target first-time buyers, allowing lower down payments without PMI.

Though adding PMI to monthly costs might not be ideal, it opens doors for many who want to buy a home sooner rather than later. Once you’ve built up enough equity, or your home appreciates, you can often remove PMI, saving money over time! 🎉
