Mold growth can start in as little as 24 hours after water gets into your home, and it doesn't need to be visible to be a problem. Some of the worst growth happens behind walls, under flooring, or inside insulation, exactly where a fan and dehumidifier can't reach and where you'd never see it just by looking around. Add in the weeks of high humidity Pittsburgh has already had, and last night's flooding landed on exactly the conditions mold needs to take hold fast. September is Mold Awareness Month, and it's a good reminder that mold doesn't always show itself right away. Sometimes it's just a musty smell before it's an actual spot on the wall. By the time you notice it, it may have been sitting behind the drywall or under the flooring for a while.
