ACTION NEEDED by September 23! Medicare coverage for non-invasive post-transplant tests such as AlloMap and AlloSure is being reviewed under the standard local coverage determination process. The proposed coverage suggests limiting patient access to those tools by requiring patients to exhibit SYMPTOMS OF REJECTION before being able to use the tests ‼️Once a patients shows symptoms of rejection the damage can be irreversible or hard to treat. The result can be the need for the patient to get a re transplant or even death 💔 You can weigh in during the public comment period which ENDS 9/23. There’s an even a template you can use. Procedure days can be very long. There’s usually a lot of waiting and we try to ‘relax’ while waiting for the team to take her to the OR.Sometimes they’re running late ⏰ and when they finally arrive to take her it’s a relief. But then after the hugs and kisses and ‘see you later’, the stretcher disappears down the hall and I have to go back into an empty room and start the waiting again but this time I’m alone.The cardiac monitor starts it’s beeping reminding me there’s no one there to monitor.It’s always a somber feeling to go back into that empty room.The quiet becomes very loud.I don’t like to turn on the tv immediately or start scrolling aimlessly on the phone because I need to use the time to settle my mind and not let anxiety take control.After a few minutes I often take a quick walk outside bc that helps clear my mind.After 29 years it does not get easier.

A year ago today, she was told “little lady, we found you a heart”. 💚 We had arrived in Nashville about 3 weeks earlier not knowing where we would end up living.We had no idea how long the wait for a heart would be-we were buckling up for a long wait but 5 days after being admitted into the hospital to wait we received the news that she’d be getting her new heart that night.We waited all day and they took her away for surgery around midnight. This is her second transplant so I now keep 2 donor families in my prayers.They have given a stranger the gift of life.There are not enough words to describe how thankful we are. We have loved getting to know Nashville and have met many great people! 1-2 her dad and I . Waiting with her to be taken to ICU room to prep for surgery.

Reading has always been a favorite past time for me. These are some of the books I’ve read lately. Clearly I lean towards the memoir genre in books. I enjoyed EVERY single one of these and highly recommend. Of course, I felt a special connection to Little Matches and Salt In My Soul. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

So grateful for all of the amazing nurses we have had through the years. These were my daughters IV lines after transplant. Imagine keeping all those meds running in addition to monitoring vitals, moving her to seated position, helping her walk, plus spoon feeding meds 20+ pills at a time with applesauce. The skill, the knowledge, the patience, the care. Every day for 12 hours at a time. I thank all of you and will be eternally grateful. Happy National Nurses Week!

Happy heart day! Celebrating 28 year heart transplant anniversary. Thanks to the generosity of her donor family, Gianna has been able to enjoy the gift of life. I’m proud of the woman she has become. Extra prayers will be going to her donor family today. 💚

The Leo Project, started in honor of Caitlin O’Hara, is an organization providing services to vulnerable youth and adults in Kenya. To celebrate what would have been Caitlin’s 37th birthday on July 31st, they are asking for everyone to create their own version of the lion.
