REMINDER! Recycle your cardboard correctly!
Local waste haulers have asked us to remind residents about proper preparation methods to make sure all of your cardboard that is left at the curb will be recycled.
Make sure your cardboard is:
no larger than 2'x 4'
clean & flattened
not tied or bundled
Otherwise, your cardboard is at risk of being landfilled as it will not fit in the recycling area of your hauler's
collection vehicle.
Help your hauler and make sure your cardboard is properly recycled by following
these rules!
Five years ago this month, New York State banned plastic bags for many applications.
Now, it almost seems second nature to bring your own bag when you visit a retailer, or return plastic bags to retailers or the ecopark for recycling.
One thing that has not changed:
bags and film are still finding their way into the residential recycling stream.
PLASTIC BAGS AND FILM ARE NOT RECYCLABLE IN RESIDENTIAL RECYCLING or in residential recycling at the Monroe County / WM ecopark.
Bags and film
must be collected separately and returned to retailers or the ecopark.
When placed in residential recycling, they cause dangerous machinery jams and downtime at the Monroe County Recycling Center.
Fun fact:
Since the inception of the bag ban in 2020, Monroe County has collectively amassed over 2,700 pounds of bags and film -
which were made into plastic lumber, fencing and other materials - including new bags!
