Arts in the Loop! There was a very important symposium last week on growing the creative economy in Rochester. I would like to thank Jim Doser and everyone else involved in making this happen. There were too many points I took away to list them all but here are three.

1. Get ready for the Gig Economy. We can have arts organizations help support artists with understanding where the best housing is to figuring out health insurance for those that don’t have that provided by a company. If Rochester can support artists in figuring out how to live and function in the City then it will start attracting more artists.

2. Buy local. When we think of buy local, we think of individual consumers buying products from local farms and companies. However, speakers from this symposium expanded this concept by encouraging local companies and governments to use local freelancers for bids and contracts in their marketing and design needs.

3. Create a Rochester Creative Index. If Rochester wants to have a thriving creative economy where companies, governments and non-profits use local artists…it has to know who the artists are and the economic impact it has to support their work. To do this Rochester needs to create a Creative Economy Index to start measuring the impact.

This is what makes commercial real estate so great, a joint partnership between a developer and a local community entrepreneur. Congrats Calvin Eaton and Matthew Drouin on creating the Douglass Auditorium at 36 King Street. The buildout looks great and I am excited to see what events get held there.

The clips from Douglass’ North Star are hard to read and elicit anger but it is important to read, never forget and ask how can we still do better.

Last week was the Finger Lakes Regional for First Robotics at RIT. First Robotics is an opportunity for young students to get excited about STEM and its applications. And as you can see, the competition was intense and fun to watch. There were official judges, a structured game for the robots, great music and entertainment and plenty of fans. It was a ton of fun to attend.

Next Friday, March 29 at 6pm is going to be Stop the Stigma ROC's second annual Jordyn Keeley Memorial Art and Writing Competition. Pictured is an art piece from last year’s competition. The art display will be at The Yards Art Collective Studios at 50-52 Public Market Way. It will be open to the public and show the art and writing of young students in the Rochester area. This year’s theme will be “This is the source of my strength.” I look forward to seeing all of the student’s art submissions.

There are a lot of great organizations that add to the experience young students receive in the Rochester area. Make sure you come out to their events to see the results of all their hard work. 🤖👩‍🎨

If anyone is ever curious about the future of development in the city of Rochester then coming to these RDDC events is a must. Great to hear about the projects of Metro CoWork, Roc City Skate Park, Charles Carroll Plaza, Anna Murray Douglass Homestead, Roc Game Dev and the new Redd Restaurant. Lots happening in Rochester!

Also side note, great views from the top of the South Ave Garage. 👀🌆📷

Wow, just wow. Last night’s performance of ‘Walk the Walk: Encounters with Rochester’s African-American Ancestors’ was beyond amazing. Congratulations to Shawn Dunwoody as Captain Sunfish, David Clark as Austin Steward, Scott Hill as Frederick Douglass, Alexandria Brown as Anna Murray Douglass and Bridgette White as Bessie Hamm.

It was held at the historic Memorial AME Zion Church, near the Corn Hill and 19th Ward neighborhoods. Lots of history in Rochester that needs to be preserved, both real estate and culture.

This past First Friday, I went to the Rochester Contemporary Art Center to see their collaboration with the Genesee Land Trust. Local artists were paired with preserved land maintained by the GLT and the artists were tasked with creating what they saw. One of the highlights was artist George Wegman’s take on the El Camino Trail. The El Camino Trail is an urban, linear trail/park and George created cool artwork from collected litter.

After the art, it was just a short walk to Javas Coffee to warm up and then check out the Eastman School of Music Building. Rochester really does contain a lot of historic buildings and things to do!

I recently had the opportunity to see Innovative Solutions space in the new Riverwood Tech Campus. I enjoyed Justin’s salute to Kodak’s history and Innovative’s new twist on Kodak’s old space. It is really incredible the quality of build Kodak always did for their buildings.

First Friday yesterday meant eating at Chortke, a great Persian kabob place, and then walking over to the Anderson Building to check out some art! I feel like we are so spoiled with a ton of culture in Rochester. You know you are in commercial real estate when at dinner you can’t stop remarking about the height of the ceilings. My wife asked what’s the difference between a flex building and a traditional strip plaza since they looked the same.

That is when you know flex buildings are here to stay. My answer was its essentially ceiling height and zoning. Ceiling height to allow operation of any use in that space, from a hair salon, restaurant, furniture store, IT company or light manufacturer. Zoning to allow the operation of those uses to occur next to each other. The diversity of use allows those flex plazas to stay occupied and sustainable into the future.

They are looking great now too. Just because its flex and high ceilings doesn’t mean you can’t have a nice façade on the outside and nicely decorated on the interior. Lots of natural light with those tall windows too! Pictured below is the Anderson Arts building and neighborhood walking guide.
