This week in Washington, D.C. was a time to remember!

I had the opportunity to join fellow REALTORS® from across the country at the Realtor Legislative Meetings, where we learned about the issues impacting homeownership, property rights, housing affordability, and our industry. More importantly, we took those conversations to Capitol Hill and advocated for the clients and communities we serve every day.

As a REALTOR®, I believe our responsibility extends beyond helping people buy and sell homes. We have a duty to protect and promote policies that strengthen communities and create opportunities for future generations of homeowners.

To top it all off, I was honored to be inducted into the National Association of REALTORS® RPAC Hall of Fame.

This recognition isn’t about me. It’s about a commitment to advocacy and ensuring that REALTORS® continue to have a seat at the table when decisions affecting homeowners are made.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Illinois, my clients, fellow REALTORS®, Veterans, and the communities I serve.

Now it’s time to bring everything I’ve learned back home and continue the work.

Helping an aging parent move can be emotional, practical, and sometimes overwhelming.

It is not just about packing boxes. It is about memories, comfort, safety, finances, and making sure the next chapter feels supported instead of rushed.

That is why I believe downsizing should be handled with patience and a clear plan. The right conversations early on can make the process feel less stressful for everyone involved.

If your family is starting to think about this kind of move, you do not have to figure it out alone.

One of the things I love about living and working in this area is how many simple places there are to enjoy a summer day close to home.

Pilcher Park Nature Center is one of those local spots that reminds you to slow down, get outside, and enjoy time with family, friends, or even just a quiet walk on your own.

Places like this are part of what makes our communities feel connected. It is not always about the biggest events. Sometimes it is the peaceful local spots that make a place feel like home.

For those keeping score at home…

My wife, DrTiffany Allen-Smith and I play Scrabble for fun whenever we get the chance. Unfortunately for me, she’s usually the one doing all the winning.

But last week, I pulled off the impossible. Not only did I win, but I dropped my own name on a Triple Word Score for 57 points.

Marriage is about celebrating each other’s successes, so today I’d like my wife to celebrate mine. 😎

Some people collect trophies. I collect rare victories.

I’ll be talking about this one for at least the next 6 months.

A lot of people are asking the same question right now. Is this a good time to buy or sell?

The honest answer is that it depends on your goals, your timing, and what is happening in your specific area.

The summer market throughout Chicagoland can move quickly, but the right strategy still matters.

If you are thinking about making a move, this is a good time to look at pricing, inventory, buyer activity, and what your next step would actually look like.

A few simple ways to enjoy June around Chicagoland.

June is one of my favorite times to slow down a little and enjoy what our local communities have to offer. Whether it is a farmers' market, a walk through a local park, a neighborhood event, or a simple coffee stop somewhere new, there are so many small ways to feel connected to the place you call home.

If you are looking for something to do this month, I always recommend starting local. Sometimes the best memories are made close to home.

One of my favorite things is celebrating and encouraging young people.

That’s why I wanted to make sure every 4th grader at my son’s school received a promotion yard sign to recognize this important milestone. I spent some time getting them ready and included a special note for each family, congratulating their child and wishing them success in all their future endeavors.

Sometimes the smallest gestures can make the biggest impact. Our children deserve to be celebrated, encouraged, and reminded that their hard work matters.

Congratulations to all of the students moving on to their next chapter. Keep dreaming big and reaching for your goals. We’re all rooting for you! 🎓

If you are thinking about selling this summer, now is the time to start getting your home ready.

You do not have to do everything at once, and you do not need to make every possible update. But small, thoughtful improvements can make a big difference in how buyers see your home.

Start with the basics:
- Clear the clutter.
- Touch up paint where needed.
- Make sure the entryway feels clean and welcoming.
- Take care of small repairs you have been putting off.
- Think about curb appeal because first impressions matter.

The goal is not to make your home perfect. The goal is to help buyers feel comfortable, confident, and excited when they walk through the door.

If you are not sure where to start, I can walk through the home with you and help you decide what is worth doing before you list.

Closing day. For most buyers, it feels like the finish line. But knowing what to expect before you get there makes the whole experience so much less stressful.

Here is a simple breakdown of what happens at closing:
- You will review and sign a lot of documents. Bring your ID and be prepared to take your time. Nothing gets rushed.
- You will pay your closing costs. Your lender will give you a Closing Disclosure ahead of time so there are no surprises.
- Keys change hands. Once everything is signed and funds are transferred, the home is yours.
- The whole process usually takes one to two hours. After that, you are a homeowner.

If you have questions about the buying process at any stage, I am always happy to walk you through it. That is exactly what I am here for.
