🛠️ Jim’s Handyperson Post of the Week: The 5-Minute Weekly Car Check
Hi everyone! It's Jim Manzzullo, your favorite Realtor® with my weekly Handyperson post. My headlight actually went out on me this week, which was the inspiration behind today's post.
🛞 Tires & Wheels
Pressure Check: Grab a digital gauge and check the air pressure on all four tires (and don't forget the spare!). Always use the recommended PSI listed on the sticker inside your driver’s door jamb, not the maximum number printed on the tire itself.
Tread & Damage: Scan the tread for embedded nails, screws, or rocks. Check for uneven wear, which could signal an alignment issue. (Quick tip: Insert a penny upside down into the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, your tread is worn down and it’s time for replacements).
Lug Nuts: Do a quick visual sweep of your wheels to make sure all your lug nuts are tight, present, and accounted for.
🔌Under the Hood & 🧪 Fluids
Windshield Washer Fluid: Top off the reservoir. Clean visibility is a non-negotiable safety requirement, especially during changing seasons or after heavy rains.
Engine Oil Level: Park on level ground, pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and pull it out again. Ensure the oil level sits right between the two indicator marks. If the oil looks gritty or completely black, it might be time for an oil change.
The Ground Check: Before you pull out of the driveway, take a quick glance at the pavement where you were parked. Spotting a puddle early can save your engine:
⚫ Dark brown/black: Engine oil
🟢 Green, pink, or orange: Coolant
🔴 Red or reddish-brown: Transmission or power steering fluid
🛡️ Safety & 👁️ Visibility
Lights: Flip on your hazards and headlights, walk around the vehicle, and verify that all headlights, taillights, and turn signals are bright and working. Step on the brake pedal while parked near a garage door or wall to check the reflection of your brake lights.
Wiper Blades: Inspect the rubber edge for cracks, tears, or skipping. If they leave streaks when you spray your washer fluid, replace them.
Mirrors & Windows: Keep a clean microfiber cloth handy to wipe down side mirrors and clean the inside of the windshield to prevent glare.
