Did you know there used to be an entire neighborhood where LAX sits today?

It was called Surfridge, an exclusive coastal community built in the 1920s in the Palisades del Rey area. Wealthy Angelenos and Hollywood names bought up lots for the ocean views and quiet bluffside streets.

But when the jet age hit and LAX began expanding, the noise became overwhelming. By the 1960s and 70s, the city began buying out the homes through eminent domain. Nearly 800 houses were removed, and the neighborhood slowly disappeared.

Today, Surfridge is closed to the public. The streets still exist, but the homes are gone. The land now serves as a protected habitat for the endangered El Segundo Blue Butterfly, making it one of the most unusual pockets of coastline in Los Angeles.

A reminder that even the most coveted neighborhoods can change, evolve, and sometimes vanish altogether.
