Honoring Nancy Hyder
It has been a few weeks since we said goodbye to former 2nd District County Commissioner Nancy Hyder, and during this time, the team at Uplands Village has been taking a moment to share our favorite memories of her. Nancy was more than a local leader; she was a beloved member of the Uplands Village family, and she will be deeply missed.
Nancy’s connection to Uplands Village spanned over a decade, and in that time, she became a fixture in our halls. She was a firm believer in the care provided here, refusing to go anywhere else for her recovery. Whether she was recovering from surgery or facing a new health challenge, Nancy visited us multiple times over the last 10 years and credited each recovery to her stay at the Uplands Village Wellness Center saying, “Some people think if you want the best rehabilitative and skilled nursing care following major surgery or other acute medical event such as a stroke or heart attack, you need to head to Nashville or Knoxville. From personal experience I can tell you it’s simply not true. We have the best skilled nursing and rehab right here.” She always knew that she needed to get stronger before she could go home, and she had unwavering confidence that Uplands would get her there.
Some of her favorite moments were spent working closely with her physical therapist, whom she truly loved, and pushing herself to reach new milestones. Her dedication to wellness was legendary. Nancy enjoyed therapy at the aquatic center at Uplands Village. So much so that when her therapy was complete, she acquired a pass, which was possible at the time, so she could spend time in the heated pools.
Nancy often shared how our staff "really fought" for her, but the truth is, we were simply inspired by how hard she fought for herself. Her big grin and energetic spirit left a lasting mark on every therapist, nurse, and staff member who had the pleasure of working with her.
While Nancy’s presence is missed, her legacy of strength and her commitment to Cumberland County will live on. Our hearts go out to her family and the many community members who, like us, were proud to call her a friend.
