Pittsburgh's landscape season slows in winter, but smart planning now means better contractor availability and spring scheduling. Winter planning gets you focused design attention when we're not managing active installations. Schedule your patio, retaining wall, or drainage consultation in January—you'll get our complete attention and preferred spring dates.

Deer in wooded suburbs like Fox Chapel and Mt. Lebanon relies heavily on landscape plants when natural food becomes scarce. Hungry deer strip bark from young trees and destroy expensive shrubs during winter months. We recommend installing deer fencing and wrapping tree trunks with hardware cloth before December to protect your landscape investment.

Fall pruning stimulates new growth that won't harden off before Pittsburgh's December temperature drops. Late-season growth is like sending plants into winter without proper preparation. Our team limits fall work to removing dead or damaged branches—major pruning waits until late February.

Hi Pittsburgh residents! Fall fertilization is crucial for our lawns because cool-season grasses need energy reserves to survive months under snow. October feeding helps roots grow deeper before dormancy, making spring recovery much stronger. Our team applies winterizer fertilizer six weeks before Thanksgiving—book our fertilization services today!

Plant roots can't tolerate soil temperatures below 15°F, even when tops look healthy. Pittsburgh's freeze-thaw cycles are especially hard on root systems in exposed areas. Our installation process includes 3–4 inches of mulch by mid-November—insulates roots and conserves moisture.

Retaining walls in Pittsburgh's hilly terrain face serious pressure from frozen soil expansion, and poor drainage behind walls causes expensive failures. Water trapped behind retaining walls freezes and expands, creating pressure that can push walls out of alignment or cause complete collapse. Our team inspects drainage systems behind retaining walls this fall and clears any blockages, preventing costly structural repairs next spring.

Pittsburgh gets 38 inches of annual rainfall, but fall can be deceptively dry when plants need moisture reserves for winter. Trees and shrubs store water in October to survive our dry, cold winters when soil moisture is frozen. Deep water established trees weekly through October with soaker hoses to keep them hydrated.

Pennsylvania's oak and maple leaves look beautiful, but thick layers on your lawn block sunlight and trap moisture. What looks natural actually suffocates your grass and creates perfect conditions for spring fungal diseases (yuck). Our maintenance program includes weekly leaf removal through November to keep your lawn healthy year round.

The landscaping industry hit $184.1 billion in 2025, but Pittsburgh's clay soil and elevation changes require specialized fall prep. Our heavy soil and freeze-thaw cycles create unique challenges that generic advice doesn't address. Focus on drainage improvements this month—spring will be too late when water problems show up.

Pittsburgh neighbors! Pool decks and concrete surfaces face over 100 freeze-thaw cycles per winter, and unsealed concrete can crack from water expansion. Water penetrates concrete pores, then expands when frozen, creating costly cracks and surface damage that only gets worse each season.

Protect your investment and prevent expensive spring repairs by getting your pool deck sealed before November.

Hey Pittsburgh! Homeowners in our community face an average first frost around mid-to-late October, and irrigation systems left unprotected can crack from just ¼ inch of water freezing inside. When water freezes, it expands and cracks expensive pump casings and piping. Don’t forget to handle irrigation winterization before Halloween - it's way cheaper than spring repairs.

Here's a Halloween tip I give my customers: You can’t stick a tombstone in soggy soil, or drape lights on overgrown bushes and expect it to look good.

Give the yard a fall cleanup. Rake up the leaves, give the shrubs a trim, and clear off the walkways.

It'll help your decorations pop, but you’ll also give trick-or-treaters a safe space to enjoy all the spooky fun. Hire us before Halloween… we’ll accept cash, card, and/or a collection of treats.
