Meet this month’s hero spotlight: Dan Nash — a proud U.S. Army veteran, Weymouth native, and now one of the most purpose-driven barbers you’ll meet.
Dan joined the Army in 2009 and served for four years as a 12 Bravo Combat Engineer. He deployed to Iraq in 2010, where he took part in over 300 route clearance missions, putting himself directly in harm’s way to locate and disable roadside bombs. His truck was hit once — a stark reminder of the harsh reality of war. Dan got out of the service in 2013 and, like many veterans, faced the difficult road of transitioning back to civilian life.
After a short stint in construction, Dan leaned on veteran nonprofits like Home Base and the Wounded Warrior Project, which played a major role in helping him get on his feet. Through their help, Dan found an opportunity in communications, where he worked for eight years. But something was missing.
He was commuting from Plymouth to Quincy every day, feeling drained, stuck in a cubicle, and searching for more purpose.
That’s when a simple haircut changed everything.
In 2021, Dan walked into Plymouth Bay Barber Shop, owned by Tom Doucette. They got to talking, and Tom saw something in Dan — planting the seed that he should give barber school a shot. That moment stuck. Dan enrolled in barber school in 2022, got licensed in 2023, and joined the Plymouth Bay Barber Shop team in downtown Plymouth.
It didn’t take long to realize he found exactly what he was missing. Cutting hair lets him work with his hands, sharpen a skill, and connect with people — especially other veterans. He’s passionate about using his chair not just for haircuts, but for real conversations, especially with fellow veterans who may not know what benefits and services are available to them. Dan has become a powerful bridge — helping guide veterans in the right direction, simply by starting a conversation.
Dan hopes to give back even more — offering free haircuts for veterans headed to job interviews, hosting discounted veteran cut drives, and using his chair as a tool for connection and support.
