Judging by the Market Basket parking lot, the whole South Shore is making chili this weekend. 😂 No judgment. Mine’s already on the stove.

But before the wind + rain pick up tonight, here are 8 last-minute things to do when you get home 👇

1. Bring in or tie down anything outside. Patio furniture, grills, planters, trash bins, kayaks. Anything you don’t want blowing around tomorrow.

2. Check high tide times. If you live near the water, know which roads around you tend to flood and never drive through standing water.

3. Test your sump pump. And check the battery backup if you have one.

4. Clear gutters + storm drains. Fall leaves can clog them quickly and send water exactly where you don’t want it.

5. Charge everything. Phones, power banks, rechargeable flashlights. Prepare in case the power goes out.

6. Fill the tub if you’re on a well. No power can mean no running water, so having extra water on hand is worth it.

7. Test the generator now, not when you need it. And remember: generators stay outside, at least 20 feet from the house, never in a garage.

8. Park away from big trees if you can. It can help protect your car and keep your driveway accessible.

And one more: check in on a neighbor who might need a hand. That’s the South Shore way. 🤍

You could keep scrolling Plymouth + South Shore listings at midnight. 👀

Or you could spend one Saturday seeing the few homes that actually fit.

You can do a lot of this on your own. The listings are all right there.

What the apps don’t do is tell you which homes you’d rule out ninety seconds inside, which ones deserve a closer look, and which ones are actually worth the drive from Pembroke to Manomet.

Before a home makes my list, here’s what I’m looking at:

📍Days on market + price history. A home sitting is information.
📍What the photos skip. No basement shot, one angle of the kitchen, a very wide lens.
📍Septic or town sewer + what we need to know about Title 5.
📍Flood zone + insurance considerations if you’re anywhere near the water.
📍 HOA fees + what they actually cover in communities like The Pinehills or Redbrook.
📍Your real commute, at the time you’d actually be driving it.

Then I put the homes in an order that makes sense, so you’re not crisscrossing the South Shore with no lunch.

You shouldn’t have to become a real estate expert in the middle of one of the biggest decisions of your life.

I’ve lived on the South Shore for 11 years, and I’m still finding places I wish someone had told me about sooner 👀

The coffee shop worth driving a few towns over for. Where to go when you want to try a new hobby. The bookstores you could spend an afternoon wandering. A cheap date for Saturday. And the places actually worth splurging on.

Basically, the local spots that take a little longer to find when you’re new here.
