You will see honu in Poipu. Here is how to do it right.

Honu rest on our beaches and swim in the calm morning water. They are protected, and the rule is simple: give them at least 10 feet of space, never touch or feed them, and if one swims up to you, stay still and let it pass.

For the best viewing, head to Poipu Beach at sunset, when they come up onto the sand to sleep for the night. It is a 5-minute walk from the Surfing Turtle.

Nobody is in a hurry here.

The chair is in the shade. The breeze comes through the palms in waves. There is a gecko sunbathing on the railing, stretched out like he owns the place. He makes a good lanai companion. Your book is open, your phone is inside, and there is nowhere else to be.

This is the whole plan for the afternoon. It is enough.

A few things happening on Kauai this week. Save this one.

1. Today: the Koloa farmers market at Knudsen Ball Park on Maluhia Road, 12 to 1:30 PM. The closest market to the Surfing Turtle, and the place our perfect morning breakfast came from. Go a little early, since parking is tight.

2. Wednesday: the Makai Music and Art Festival at Princeville Makai Golf Club, 1 to 5 PM. Free entry, free parking, live music, and 20+ local artisans. A bit of a drive from Poipu, but a lovely day trip to see the north side.

Bonus for Friday night: Hanapepe Art Night, 5 to 8 PM. Galleries, food trucks, and the swinging bridge, about 20 minutes west of Poipu.

Quick heads up if you're on Kauai this weekend... the Chocolate and Coffee Festival is this Sunday, Oct 18 at Kilohana Plantation in Lihue, 10am to 4pm. Eleventh year running. Chocolate tastings, coffee tastings, local makers, the whole delicious situation. (We are the people who plan trips around food, so trust us on this one.) Tasting passports are $40 in advance or $45 at the door, and it benefits Malama Kauai. If you're at the Turtle this weekend, this is your Sunday plan. Go hungry.

Save this before your Kauai trip. The beach bag checklist we give every guest:

1. Reef-safe sunscreen. Hawaii law bans oxybenzone and octinoxate, and you will want to reapply after every swim.
2. A reusable water bottle. Fill up at the condo and skip the single-use plastic.
3. A towel plus a dry bag for the sandy stuff on the way home.
4. Sandals you can rinse. You will walk through sand, grass, and the occasional puddle.
5. A snorkel set if you have one. Poipu mornings are calm and clear.
6. The leave-no-trace rule: take everything you brought, and if you see honu, give them 20 feet of space.

Our perfect Poipu morning starts before the day gets loud.

First, coffee on the lanai while the sky goes from pink to gold and the mynah birds start their morning commentary. Then a slow walk to Poipu Beach, sand still cool under your feet, honu sometimes napping by the rocks. Back home for an easy breakfast: fresh pineapple, papaya with a squeeze of lime, or whatever the farmers market gave you on Saturday.

One tip: go early. The beach is calmest before 9, and from the Surfing Turtle it is an easy 5-minute walk, no driving or parking needed. You also get the best light for photos.

Kauai is welcoming visitors back, and local businesses are asking people to return.

It’s been good to see the updates from Brennecke’s Beach Broiler and Java Kai, two of our favorites. A meal out, a coffee stop, or a purchase from a local shop helps support the people who make this island such a special place to visit.

Most visitor businesses have reopened, though some communities are still recovering. Please check current conditions and respect closures when planning your trip.

We have just a few October dates left at the Surfing Turtle, with openings in November and December. Thanksgiving week has been taken. Christmas week is still available.

A little update from our family’s place in Poipu 🐢

We’re grateful the Surfing Turtle came through the storm without damage. Recovery continues across Kauai, and supporting local businesses that are ready to welcome visitors makes a real difference.

We have a few October dates remaining and more availability in November, with special fall rates for stays completed by November 15.
